Anzac Day

Poppies, a symbol of remembranceAnzac Day is a National Public Holiday in Australia and New Zealand, and is commemorated on 25 April every year to honour members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who fought at Gallipoli in Turkey during World War I.

Anzac Day marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War.  The acronym ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, whose soldiers were known as Anzacs. Anzac Day remains one of the most important national occasions of both Australia and New Zealand.  

This is a rare instance of two sovereign countries not only sharing the same national day, but making reference to both countries in its name. (more…)
