Posted on Monday, February 2, 2009 in Wetlands

Kakadu National ParkWorld Wetlands Day the 2 February 2009 so let’s celebrate the beauty, diversity and natural wonder of Australia’s wetlands.

Birds in paradise
For the ultimate in bird watching, aka twitching tourism, you can’t go past the Northern Territory’s Kakadu wetlands. This World Heritage-listed wilderness is where more than 396 species of bird converge to put on a dazzling display of feathered frivolity. Here you’ll encounter iconic characters such as the dancing brolga, red-tailed black cockatoo, and flocks of magpie geese.

You don’t need to have been born with a pair of binoculars around your neck to fully appreciate Kakadu’s diverse bird life. A number of expert-guided tours are available that will have you reeling off bird names in no time.

Birds Australia promotes environmentally sustainable birding tourism in the region. The project also gives local Indigenous people opportunities to share their knowledge and create livelihoods through sustainable bird watching.
